Student Walkouts and Protests

Many of you have already given considerable attention to how you will respond to any student protests that may occur this week or in subsequent weeks concerning school shootings. An additional resource you might want to review can be found on the nsba.org website. It is a publication developed by the National School Boards Association (NSBA) Council of School Attorneys (COSA). Many members of our School Law Practice Group are members of COSA and Mike Julka currently sits on the COSA Board of Directors.

As noted in the COSA publication, your own District policies should be reviewed when considering the approach your District may wish to take regarding any protests. However, the COSA guidance provides a good review of legal issues and some scenarios which might help you further prepare.
