Sometimes that’s cash. Often, it’s other factors, such as being able to make a change in the world, navigating the company down paths that aren’t clear, or pulling a struggling enterprise back from the brink.

Some of the approaches available include:

  • Deferred compensation – sometimes tied to the company’s performance; sometimes not
  • Sharing the power to vote and direct the company from the top as an investor and a leader
  • Rewarding taking the company to the next level through stock options or stock appreciation rights
  • Providing equity compensation to young leaders of companies where cash is scarce but the founders have an idea that will change the direction of an entire industry
