Athena has for the past eighteen years represented both lenders and borrowers in a variety of commercial real estate related loan transactions and workouts. Her work has included hotel, apartment, strip mall, and other types of real estate financing.
Athena also advises banks and bank holding companies on the acquisition of other banks and bank holding companies, assists in the merger of bank equals, and helps create bank and financial holding companies. She works with banks to establish and acquire branch banks.
Athena has negotiated on behalf of Wisconsin’s community banks to resolve issues with the FDIC, OCC, DFI, and the Minneapolis and Chicago Federal Reserve. Another major part of her practice involves negotiating and drafting employment and other compensation arrangements for banks and their officers and directors. In addition, Athena works closely with the Wisconsin Bankers Association and its subsidiary, FIPCO, to expand FIPCO’s loan and deposit offerings in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, and other states. She also assists the WBA’s legal department in response to legal questions of WBA members.

The FDIC recently issued its new final rule on the definition of “deposit broker” and “brokered deposit”. With PPP and other issues facing banks, it’s easy enough to not pay attention to this rule. The final rule will take effect on April 1, 2021, with some delayed compliance permitted to January 1, 2022.
